Asbestos removal in New Zealand is tightly regulated for good reason—disturbing asbestos-containing materials can release hazardous fibres that pose serious health risks. If your property was built or renovated before the early 2000s, there’s a real possibility asbestos is present. The key is handling it properly from the outset with the right licensing, process, and documentation. 

Class A - Friable Asbestos

This is the highest-risk category. Friable asbestos can be easily crumbled or reduced to powder, making fibres airborne and highly dangerous if disturbed.

Typical examples include:

  • Sprayed coatings and insulation
  • Pipe lagging
  • Loose-fill insulation

Removal of Class A asbestos must be carried out by a licensed Class A contractor under strict containment conditions, including negative pressure enclosures and continuous air monitoring.

Class B - Non-Friable Asbestos

This refers to asbestos that is bonded within a solid material and less likely to release fibres unless damaged or disturbed.

Common examples include:

  • Asbestos cement cladding and roofing
  • Vinyl floor tiles
  • Textured coatings

While lower risk than friable asbestos, Class B still requires controlled handling and must be removed by a licensed professional when it involves more than minor work.
